"In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different."
--Coco Chanel

In August of 1883, a brand new baby girl was born. Her name was Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel. Little would her friends and family know Gabrielle would grow up to be one of history's greatest influences in fashion from the 1920s and on. After having established her house of couture in Paris, Chanel became highly noted for simple jersey dresses and suits; perfumes; black or gray pullovers with white piqué collars and cuffs; box-jacket suits; costume jewelry; knit suits; trousers for women; textiles; and clothing generally designed for comfort. Her fashion empire ranged from Chanel suits and quilted handbags with chains to costume jewelry and a textile house.

The name "Coco" came about during her short-lived singing career in cafes and concerts. Soon after, she began to expand to couture, working in jersey. This was a first in the French world of fashion. By the 1920s her fashion house had immensely expanded. Her “little boy” look became a fashion trend; her relaxed and casual clothing became extremely popular and very liberating to other women. Her signature perfume was introduced in 1922, Chanel No. 5, which continues to make profits for Chanel’s company this very day. Her cardigan jacket was introduced in 1925 and the infamous “little black dress,” introduced a year later. Her styles continued to be popular many years later, even though her fashions didn’t change much.
During World War I, Chanel briefly served as a nurse. Unfortunately the Nazi occupation of France put a halt in the fashion industry. Her popularity declined when she had an affair with and Nazi officer. Chanel made a comeback in 1954 in which she introduced the Chanel suit and purses as well as pea jackets and bell bottom pants for women. Until her death in 1971, Chanel continued to work in the fashion industry. She will forever be remembered as one of the history’s greatest influences in women’s fashion. The Chanel company is still operating and run by chief designer Karl Lagerfeld. Her trends continue to influence everyday clothing for women. Chanel's innovations changed women's lives forever.
